If you told me 12 months ago that I would actually enjoy going to the gym, I would have laughed in your face. Seriously, I would have preferred watching 10 hours straight of Countryfile* instead of one hour in the gym.

I hated the thought of getting sweaty and being the most unfit person in the room. My face also turns a stunning shade of tomato red when I exercise, which is most definitely not a look I adore…

But earlier this year I faced my fear and went along to an exercise class with a friend – basically so I couldn’t back out! It’s at our local gym (called Gym & Tonic, which I quite like the sound of too – although I can confirm they don’t actually sell gin).

Blargh. It was terrible and I couldn’t walk for a week, but I went back the next week anyway and persevered.

Not much changed at first and I had a few ‘blips’ where I fell ill, didn’t feel like I was making any progress or got sidetracked with other things. So a couple of months ago I decided to take it more seriously and signed up for weekly PT sessions with Dean of CombatFit.

7 months on and I can honestly say that I actually enjoy my weekly sessions. Today was ‘pad work’ and I love being able to get all my aggression out on the pads so that’s always a favourite.

And although I’ve lost a bit of weight and on my way to my target, I’m focussing on feeling better – and I am definitely more fit than I have been for a VERY long time.

So, what’s my point?

My point is this…

Anything you become successful at takes time. It’s a gradual process. You have to put the work in. If you sit around and wonder why things are happening then they never will. Action is always required.

My eldest son has a poster on his wall that says:

“Dude, suckin’ at something is the first step to being sorta good at something.” – Jake the Dog (from Adventure Time)

OK, so he’s a cartoon character and it’s one of the most bizarre show I think I’ve ever seen, but you know what, he’s right.

Overnight successes are rarely, if ever, overnight successes. Olympic athletes don’t just turn up one day and win a medal. Your life isn’t going to be amazing tomorrow if you don’t put the work in today. Your business won’t grow and be what you want it to be if you simply sit around and wait for the clients to arrive on your doorstep.

The key to getting where you want to be is to take small steps every day and to NEVER GIVE UP!

Sure, I have days, weeks and even months when I know I just can’t give all of my tasks the attention they need. But if something is important enough to me I have learned to never give up on it. It may take me longer but it’s not a race and I’m pretty sure I’m not making it out alive in the end anyway so who cares if I’m slower than anyone else. The point is that I keep trying and take action every day to get where I want to be.

Oh, and for the first time that I can ever remember I can actually do a push-up so you know what? I’m making progress!

Every single step you take to make a brighter future for yourself counts.

So what steps are you going to take today that will bring YOUR dreams closer to reality?

* In case you’re wondering, I really detest Countryfile. It was regular Sunday night viewing for my ex and I find it extremely boring. But if you like it and would prefer to watch 10 hours straight and ditch the gym, then that’s up to you…
